This was the big one. Every January, USA WEEKEND put a single idea in front of roughly fifty million readers across some six hundred Sunday newspapers — and in 2008 the idea was mine. They put me in a jersey with 08 on the chest, handed me two dumbbells, and ran it as a Special Health Report: Get Fit in 2008.
I was the magazine’s FitSmart editor, and that Sunday column was one of my favorite things I have ever done. The cover story, reported by Michele Hatty, walked readers through The 12-Second Sequence — the method behind the whole issue.
What the method actually was
Two strength workouts a week. Ten seconds of controlled movement into maximum tension, a two-second hold, and a slow return — twelve seconds per repetition instead of the fast, sloppy reps most people do. Nothing else changes. The point was never volume. The point was time under tension, because lean muscle is what burns calories while you sit still.
Eighteen years later that is still the argument I make, only now the research has caught up to it: muscle is the organ of longevity. It is the same principle running through MORE TIME today.

The move, and the breakfast
Page 7 carried the two pieces readers actually clipped out and stuck on the refrigerator. The first was Resolve to… Firm Up Your Core — a Swiss-ball rollout I built specifically for USA WEEKEND readers. Kneel, make fists on the ball, roll forward over a slow ten-count while exhaling in short controlled bursts, hold two seconds at full extension, then return over another ten. Three times, twice a week, for one month. That is the whole prescription. It works the upper abs and the transverse abs — the sheet that wraps you front to back and holds your posture up.
The second was Resolve to… Eat Breakfast: a chocolate banana protein smoothie and heart-healthy flaxseed toast, written for the mornings when there is no time. Protein to build lean muscle, just enough carbohydrate for energy, and good fat. A muscle meal, not a sugar meal.
