“The runaway success of his 2005 bestseller, The 3-Hour Diet, secured Cruise’s reputation as the country’s leading weight-loss expert… ‘I want to help America get thinner and healthier in a way that’s not strict or faddish.’”San Diego Magazine, January 2006

I still remember the event. A room full of people my city had decided to bet on for the year ahead — scientists, restaurateurs, builders, teachers — and my name on the list with them. I was thirty-five, I had one big book behind me, and I had no idea whether any of it would last.

What that honor gave me wasn’t press. It was a picture of the future. Being told by your own hometown that you’re worth watching makes you decide, quietly, to be worth watching for a long time — not for one bestseller, but for a career. Nearly everything I’ve built since traces back to that decision.

San Diego has been in the room from the very beginning of my longevity work. It’s where I trained my first clients, where Louise Hay built Hay House, and where nearly every one of my books was written. Three years later the magazine put me on the cover of its annual fitness issue — “8 Hot Fitness Trends” — but this January 2006 issue is the one that came first.

Twenty years on, the work has become a longevity method rather than a diet, and the next book, MORE TIME PROTOCOL, arrives in 2027. I hope to do more with San Diego Magazine and its readers along the way. The city has been with me since page one.
