VO₂ max is simply the ceiling on how much oxygen your body can deliver and use. It is the strongest single predictor of all-cause mortality we have — stronger than smoking status, stronger than blood pressure, stronger than diabetes.

What the diagram shows is the physical substrate of that number. Non-endurance-trained muscle is pale and sparsely fed: only a thin web of capillaries reaches the fibres. Endurance-trained muscle is the same tissue wrapped in a dense red network. Cardiovascular training sprouts those vessels, so starved tissue becomes fed tissue.

You do not need to become a runner. Most of the gain comes from consistent easy aerobic work with a small amount of harder effort on top — enough to make the heart a stronger pump and the network around your muscle denser.
