Jorge grew up in San Diego, California with his mom, dad, sister, and grandmother. Jorge’s grandmother moved to the U.S. from Colombia and was a powerful influence in Jorge’s young adult life, although not always for the better. She enforced a strict set of rules at home and raised Jorge in a traditionalist manner, forcing him to suppress his true self and instead molding him to express the “machismo” that is so revered in the Hispanic culture. This stressful upbringing led Jorge to over-eat as a child, whose family often repeated that “food is love,” causing him to become 40 pounds overweight by the time he left home for college at age 18.
However, just as Jorge was beginning his college career, his father was diagnosed with prostate cancer and given 6 months to a year to live. This would change Jorge’s eating habits – and life – forever. Rather than opting for chemo, Jorge’s father chose to pursue a path of alternative medicine, which focused principally on his diet. He got rid of the processed foods he’d been consuming for most of his life, and instead began eating wheatgrass juice almost exclusively. In solidarity with his father and always curious to learn, Jorge joined his father on this wheatgrass diet. Jorge’s father beat his cancer without ever having to undergo chemo, and Jorge changed his aspirations from politics to health and nutrition.
Accordingly, after graduating college Jorge became a certified personal trainer. A class about entrepreneurship that Jorge took while in school led him to think creatively, and Jorge became one of the first trainers to share his knowledge and expertise with the public through online videos in the late 1990s – well before social media was ever invented. Through these online tutorials, Jorge was able to help people from all around the country, and one of his success stories was so incredible that he was invited to the Oprah Winfrey show in 1998.
One of the best pieces of advice Oprah gave Jorge was, no matter what you do, “keep it simple.” Taking Oprah’s advice to heart, Jorge’s first book, 8 Minutes in the Morning, was published in 2001 and explained how doing just two exercises in the morning for 8 minutes can help you lose weight. Because the method was so simple and effective, 8 Minutes in the Morning became an international bestseller and was translated into 16 languages.
Over the last two decades, Jorge has published over 35 additional books in 5 series. In that time, he has worked with some of the world’s biggest celebrities, including Angelina Jolie, Khloe Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez, and Steve Harvey, and has received support from some of the world’s most recognized names, including President Bill Clinton, Katie Couric, Suzanne Somers, and Anderson Cooper.
In addition to being a New York Times best-selling author, Jorge is a contributor to AARP Magazine with over 22 million monthly readers, contributing fitness expert for Prevention magazine with over 7 million monthly readers, and a contributor-at-large for First For Women with over 3 million monthly readers.
