The latest dietary guidelines, which help promote health and prevent chronic disease, emphasize the importance of consuming a healthy, whole diet including fruits, vegetables, dairy, grains, proteins, and oils. These foods should be eaten within a sensible calorie level, and with limited amounts of saturated fats, added sugars, and sodium. Sounds reasonable, right? After writing over 30 books on weight loss and nutrition, I am a proponent of an anti-inflammatory diet that includes all of these food groups — in the right portions, and eaten at the right times, of course.
Of all the essential food groups, dairy gets the worst rap! Why? Because the type of fat found in whole-fat dairy products is saturated fat, which doctors warn can increase your risk of heart disease, as well as “bad” LDL cholesterol. Additionally, some people have a hard time digesting dairy or are lactose intolerant, which makes them want to steer clear completely.
However, I believe that dairy is an important contributor to a healthy diet, especially due to the calcium benefits. There is definitely more good news than bad when it comes to dairy — the key is to make smart, thoughtful choices when selecting your dairy. For example, many nutrition experts suggest having fat-free or low-fat dairy products to make dairy more accessible. They also recommend yogurt as a preferred form of diary, since it provides lots of protein and calcium, and it may also optimize healthy gut bacteria.
I love getting my dairy in the form of yogurt since it’s so versatile, and one of my all-time favorite brands is Peak Yogurt. What makes Peak so special, why do I go out of my way to get my yogurt delivered from these guys? Get this…they make Triple Cream yogurt, which has 17% milkfat.
