Being a fitness trainer for over two decades, it’s my job to stay on top of all the latest fitness trends and workouts. From cardio, to weight training, to yoga and Pilates, I’ve tried it all and have worked many different exercise elements into my clients’ routines, depending on their individual needs and goals. But after all these years, there are certain workouts that have risen to the top of my list. HIIT, or high-intensity interval training, is one of those methods.

HIIT is a combination of short, very-high intensity bursts of cardio exercise, followed by equal or longer periods of rest. For example, 30-60 seconds of sprinting, followed by a minute or two of walking. This type of training gets — and keeps — your heart rate up, and burns more fat in less time. HIIT is more effective than steady-state cardio because the intensity is higher. It speeds up your metabolism even more, helping you burn a maximum number of calories throughout the day.

Now, a HIIT workout is at the core of a really cool, cutting-edge fitness system called Vasper, which jams the benefits of over two hours of high-intensity exercise into a 21-minute session. That’s right — your body gets the equivalent of 2½ hours of continual exercise in a 21-minute, low-intensity interval workout. All of the benefits of a HIIT workout, in record time!

I’m a fitness trainer, so of course, I think that staying healthy with good old-fashioned physical activity is the best way to go. You have to exercise and work up a good sweat to get the results you want — there isn’t an easy way around that! And we all know that besides the toning benefits you get from exercise, it’s great for energy, sleep, and mental clarity and well-being. Exercise is the gold standard when it comes to feeling great and improving your overall health.

That said, there’s been some very cool, recent advances in fitness technology that may allow you to forego some of those exercise efforts, while still providing an optimal body conditioning experience. A machine that can improve your body’s energy system functioning, while you sit comfortably in a pod and relax. Sounds too good to be true, right? I thought so too, so I decided to give it a try. There have been many popular and trendy workouts over the years, but a tried-and-true workout that has been proven to build and maintain lean muscle is called strength (or resistance) training. The overall term of strength training encompasses many different fitness routines, including bodybuilding, circuit training, power lifting, and isometric weight training. I’ve tried them all at one time or another, depending on what my fitness goals were at the time. And of course, I rely on this type of training when I work out with my celebrity clients. I always find a way to incorporate strength training into my workout sessions — it’s really that important for a strong and healthy body, you guys!

Another form of strength training that has gained popularity in the past few years is kettlebell training. A kettlebell is a free weight that has a handle attached to the top – perfect for swinging! You can use it to perform many types of exercises, including ballistic exercises that combine strength, cardiovascular, and flexibility training all in one. It’s pretty amazing when you think about it, actually, that using this small, simple piece of equipment can be such an incredibly efficient way to lose weight, increase your cardiovascular fitness and strength, and tone your body FAST.

I don’t want to sugarcoat it, you guys — kettlebell workouts are definitely tough, especially if you’re not used to this type of exercise. But that’s what makes these workouts so effective! Generally, a successful muscle building training program will require you to lift weights two to five days per week, and complete up to six sets of multiple reps of each exercise. You should definitely check in with your doctor before starting a strength training routine, to ensure that’s a healthy exercise option for your individual needs. I also recommend consulting a fitness trainer before trying a kettlebell workout, to make sure your form is on point and you’re doing the exercises correctly. But with this type of consistent training, you will see increases in lean muscle mass — and all the benefits that come along with it!

Being a fitness trainer and an active guy in general, I love the results I get from working out. Therefore, I’m always willing to make it a priority and put in the time. In addition to the coaching sessions I sweat through with my celebrity clients, I also work individual exercise into my weekly routine to keep the activity level high. If you want to take better control of your health and tone up that body, you need to work hard!
